Important Considerations

When to See a Fertility Specialist

There are many things to consider as you determine the path to parenthood that’s right for you. Throughout your decision-making process you will encounter factors that affect you physically, emotionally, and financially. It is a complex experience, and everyone’s timeline is different. When you are ready, our dedicated team of experts can help you develop a customized treatment plan that works best for your family.

General Timelines

Many factors impact fertility in women and men. Generally speaking, it is recommended that a woman under 35 who has been trying to get pregnant for a year, or a woman over 35 who has been trying for six months, consult with a fertility specialist. It is also recommended that women who have had more than three miscarriages meet with a specialist. Many women who have had miscarriages go on to have healthy pregnancies, but the miscarriages may indicate a fertility problem.

Female Infertility

A fertility specialist—also known as a Reproductive Endocrinologist— specializes in diagnosing and treating fertility issues. Your SRM physician can treat various conditions, including:

  • Endometriosis
  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
  • Ovulation problems
  • Repeated miscarriages
  • Abnormalities of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries

Male Infertility

Both partners should be seen if a couple is having trouble conceiving. Approximately 30–50% of infertile couples may be affected by male factor infertility complications. Causes of fertility issues in men range from Erectile Dysfunction to inadequate number or motility of sperm.

Lifestyle Factors

The choices you make in your day-to-day life can affect your fertility. Proper nutrition and adequate exercise are important factors in preparing your body for conception and a healthy pregnancy. Cutting out unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking, and recreational drug use is important for your general wellness, and takes on an added level of importance if you are trying to conceive.
