Egg Donation
It is with great appreciation that we acknowledge your interest in our Donor Egg Program at Seattle Reproductive Medicine (SRM). There are many indications for couples struggling with family building to utilize a young woman's eggs to achieve pregnancy. Advanced age, multiple IVF failures, history of chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and premature ovarian failure are just a few of the most common reasons. Patients enter the SRM Egg Donation Program.
As an egg donor, you are giving an invaluable gift to infertile couples who may otherwise never be able to experience the joy of parenthood.
At Seattle Reproductive Medicine (SRM) our Donor Egg Program is managed by an experienced and compassionate Nurse Practitioner which offers donors and recipients confidence and peace of mind.
General Donor Qualifications
You must first complete the initial Egg Donor Initial Screening Questionnaire. Please do not fill out this questionnaire if one of the following applies to you:
- You are under age 21 or older than age 31;
- Your weight exceeds the maximum allowed for your height according the American Society of Reproductive Medicine; Click here to view chart.
- You have smoked cigarettes or used illegal drugs within the last three months or are currently using them;
- You are on anti-depression medications and your prescribing physician does not recommend that you stop taking them to do a donor cycle;
- You have any family history of manic depressive or bipolar disorder;
- You are currently on Depo prevera birth control or have had a shot within the last 6 months and do not want to stop taking the shots to do a donor cycle;
- You have not completed your GED or have attained your high school diploma;
- You have a family history of substance abuse; or
- You have ever been tested positive for AIDS or HIV.
- You have had a tattoo or body piercing in the last 12 months.
Screening Process
The first step as an egg donor candidate at SRM is to complete a brief Egg Donor Initial Screening Questionnaire . Our Donor Egg Coordinator will be in touch with you shortly after submitting the form. The screening process will include an informational session, physical examination, psychological evaluation, genetic screening, and lab testing for general health assessment and infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis.
Egg Donation Treatment Cycle
After being accepted as a suitable egg donor candidate, you will meet with our Nurse Practitioner / Donor Egg Coordinator to review your treatment cycle. Coordination and synchronization of this treatment cycle to the recipient's cycle will occur. This process may take several months based on your natural menstrual cycle, the recipient's natural menstrual cycle and personal schedules. You will then be placed on medications for about 2-3 weeks to stimulate your ovaries to produce more than the usual one egg a woman ovulates each menstrual cycle. Your progress will be monitored frequently with vaginal ultrasounds and blood work in our office to ensure the eggs are developing appropriately.
Egg Recovery
Once you are ready for egg recovery as determined by a SRM physician, you will be given another medication exactly 35 hours prior to the removal of eggs from your ovaries. This medication will bring the eggs to final maturity. The sonographic egg recovery (SER) involves the use of an ultrasound-guided needle to gently remove the eggs from the ovaries. It is a simple, painless procedure with the use of light sedation medication and takes about 20 minutes to complete. You will be completely "out" and not remember a thing. The aspirated eggs are then donated to an anonymous recipient.
Egg donation treatment is always combined with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) in which eggs and sperm are placed together in a laboratory for fertilization. After the procedure, someone will need to drive you home where you should rest for the remainder of the day. You can expect to resume normal activities the following day. We encourage all egg donors to return to the office to be seen and make sure everything is going well.
Donor Compensation
Your decision to become an egg donor is a generous contribution and you will be compensated for your time and commitment by the recipient. The total compensation for the first completed cycle is $4,000 and all subsequent completed cycles is $4,500 which is paid after the egg recovery. You will not be responsible for any medical costs related to the screening process or egg donation cycle.
