Endocrine Lab Technician

OVERVIEW: Responsible for performing laboratory services in accordance with Laboratory Operations Manual, with assisting in the introduction of new laboratory services, with training other laboratory technicians as required and with promoting and maintaining Laboratory Philosophy and Performance Standards.

SCOPE: This is a non-exempt position reporting to the Lab Director.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follows established procedures and protocols for processing the Endocrinology Laboratory blood samples:
    • Is trained and proficient on the DPC Immulite 2000.
    • Is trained and proficient in Phlebotomy.
  • Maintains a Customer Service Oriented environment:
    • Acts as a roll model by demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Assures customers are greeted with prompt attention and caring attitude.
    • Treat all customers, both internal and external with respect, dignity and care.
    • Provide as much information as possible to involve customers in their treatment.
  • Provides a Safe Environment for Staff and Patients:
    • Aware of OSHA Standards, assures compliance and reports concerns appropriately.
    • Monitors physical environment for hazards and follows through to resolve them.
  • Operates in a Cost Effective Manner:
    • Uses and orders supplies with cost consciousness in mind.
    • Makes suggestions to reduce cost.
    • Reports supplies needed to the appropriate person so that running out can be avoided
  • Participates in Quality Assessment and Improvement:
    • Understands key measures of departmental operations that indicate stability of care and processes. Monitors these indicators for variation.
    • Takes responsibility for pursuing patient complaints in a customer service orientated fashion. Documents concerns and seek resolutions.
    • Demonstrates effective use of the Incident reporting system to route concerns and opportunities for improvement.
    • Understand the principles of CQI, including team work and data based decision making.
    • Identifies improvement opportunities and participates in resolving problems identified.
  • Complies with Applicable Regulations, Policies and Standards:
    • Articulates understanding of applicable Practice and Corporate SOPs.
    • Maintains knowledge of healthcare regulations and complies with applicable Regulatory Standards.
  • Demonstrates a Commitment to Teamwork:
    • Interacts with physicians, clinical staff, embryologists, financial and administrative staff as needed for delivery of high quality patient care.
    • Attend meetings as requested or notifies organizer if unable to attend.
    • Acts cooperatively as an active participant on teams giving input and ideas, treating other team members with respect.
    • Follows up on commitments made to team for action items or communicates status and renegotiates timelines.
    • Communicates in an open, assertive manner at all times.

JOB SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clinical and Technical responsibilities:
    • Perform endocrine hormone assays for infertility patients.
    • Complete understanding of blood tests required for the different ART cycles.
    • Perform phlebotomy, as required, on patients with the complete identification of each sample drawn, including the preparation for both in house testing and specimens being sent to a reference lab.
    • Assures proper sample collection, delivery and identification.
      Communicates with center personnel, medical staff, patients and outside resources to ensure high quality patient care.
    • Processes requisitions, test reports and test records in a timely manner.
    • Other clinical laboratory duties as assigned.
  • Documentation :
    • Generate blood work / endocrine reports, entering cycling patient results in ARTworks.
    • Works and charts with results to the appropriate Doctor to review and sign.
    • Proficiency with Clinical Art Works for the ordering of laboratory tests and entering daily results in the system.
    • Maintains laboratory records, reports and files, daily monitoring of quality control and recording of monthly stats for the Endocrine Laboratory.
    • Document quality assurance activities including assessment of problems and appropriate corrective action.
    • Prepares periodic reports and other documents for supervisors.
  • Laboratory Services:
    • Perform safe handling of specimens by following the safety guidelines for biohazardous, infectious and toxic substances in the Endocrine Laboratory.
    • Perform daily start-up on D.P.C. and run all appropriate endocrine assays.
    • Document quality assurance activities including description of unusual incidents, problems, and appropriate corrective action on remedial action sheet.
    • Perform daily/weekly quality control for procedures and equipment used in the Laboratory.
    • Perform endocrine proficiency testing as required by CLIA ‘88 regulations.
    • Assist with writing new policies and procedures and updating the Endocrine Laboratory procedure manual when necessary.
    • Assist laboratory personnel in performing laboratory services in accordance with Federal, State and local laws and guidelines to ensure laboratory maintains accreditation.
    • Assist as required in maintaining laboratory operations in conformity with OSHA and CLIA ‘88 regulations.
    • Sets up, calibrates and cleans laboratory equipment. Assures routine maintenance and repairs are performed and documented.
    • Follows manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshoots malfunctions; calls for repairs; maintain equipment inventories; evaluate new equipment and techniques.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BS and successful completion of Medical Technology program (MT) or Associate degree from MLT program of an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of One year laboratory Experience
  • Previous work experience in a research/hospital laboratory.
  • Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and office machines (i.e. computer, fax, copier, etc.).
  • Ability to work as part of a multi disciplinary team.
  • Ability to communicate accurately and concisely.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

 

ENVIRONMENT:

  • Physical: Moderate physical effort requiring the ability to move about the laboratory. Visual acuity and dexterity required, Intermittent sitting and standing with freedom of movement.
  • Mental: Frequent period of concentration requiring close attention to integrated process and results; independent judgment required; interruption requesting test results or current status of tests in process.
  • Conditions: Work is performed in modern, well-equipped environment. Employee exposed to potentially infections specimens throughout the course of each day’s activities. Protective clothing is required to be worn during any period of exposure providing increased levels of protection. Occasional exposure to hazardous chemical, disagreeable odors and electrical materials as part of routine operations.
