Infertility treatment can be stressful physically, emotionally--and financially. Cost, especially the cost of IVF, is the number one reason infertile couples cite for not pursuing treatment. Many couples are indeed unable to afford the medical costs, but others may have an exaggerated view of the burden on their finances.
Put the costs into perspective. The expense of treating infertility has dropped over the years when taking into account success. Although the costs of infertility procedures have remained fairly stable, technologies are always improving. Better diagnosis can lead to quicker, less expensive treatment. You are more likely to conceive a child with fewer medical procedures--and at less cost--than earlier patients. And, if you are successful in bringing home a baby, the expenses of raising a child--not to mention college--can easily dwarf the price of fertility treatment!
Still, infertility treatment and the cost of IVF can be an expensive proposition--even with the best medical care some couples may not conceive. Also, adoption can cost upwards of $25,000, and most agencies require parents to prove they are financially stable. If you are considering adoption, be sure to reserve enough money to bring home a child.
You may get help paying for treatment, through insurance, tax breaks, low-interest loans and other means. Examine your medical insurance policy. Even if you do not believe you have IVF insurance coverage, read your policy carefully--you may find some surprises. Many policies only cover diagnosis of infertility--but some diagnostic procedures can help you conceive!
And get the right treatment right away. Many couples waste time, money, and emotional energy with doctors who do not specialize in infertility treatment. Your general practitioner and ob/gyn may be well-meaning, but these doctors rarely have training, focus, or experience in reproductive endocrinology. Ask for a referral to a specialist or a fertility clinic. Check the specialist's record to verify that the clinic is successful.
